EXCITING NEWS!
I am Kickstarting a new novel called THE HYENA.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/davidquantick/the-hyena?ref=user_menu
It’s the story of an artist called Deborah Parkinson. She was a surrealist who grew up in pre-WW2 Plymouth where her dad ran a pub, then she ran away to Paris where she met Dali and Picasso and Frida Kahlo, and fell in love with a mysterious artist called Marius.
When war came, she followed Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington to Mexico, where she hung out with Kahlo again, and met Leon Trotsky. Implicated in Trotsky’s murder, she fled back to Plymouth in the Blitz.
In her later years, she settles down with her young family, resolves some issues in New York, and nearly dies in an old people’s home. Nearly.
THE HYENA is serious, there are things I wanted to write about. But it’s also funny. Deborah’s solution to a male-dominated art world will, as they say on the media bots, shock you. Her encounters with the great are not respectful. She is sharp, and witty, and irrepressible. She’s an underdog who can’t be put down.
THE HYENA is also emotional. It’s got a war in it, and an assassination. It’s got love, and loss, and sadness. But it’s also got warmth, and characters.
If you contribute to THE HYENA’s Kickstarter, you get the chance to buy Steven Appleby’s unique art for the book, in the form of prints, postcards and other items. You can buy into a one-off collection of Deborah Parkinson’s short stories. There’s the offer of lunch with me, and, even more appealing, the chance to claim your own one to one writing course, tailored to your needs.
And you get a copy of THE HYENA. The best book I’ve ever written.

NIGHT TRAIN
"I hadn't planned to read all of Night Train in one sitting, but I found myself doing just that. David Quantick's novel sets up a vast mystery and barrels deliriously toward a conclusion you'll never see coming like, I don't know, some kind of railed vehicle that operates in the dark." --David Wong, author of John Dies at the End
"The style, content and characters of this dark, witty and surprisingly moving novel make David Quantick a Kurt Vonnegut for a new generation." --Sarah Pinborough, author of Behind Her Eyes
"Either a stone-cold classic that will last for decades if not centuries, or, at the very worst, the best summer read you'll have this year." --Sublime Horror
ALL MY COLORS
"Really rich, funny, unsettling and just very alive. A brilliant premise executed with total confidence and authority." -- John Niven, Kill My Friends
"Among the funniest, creepiest, truest books about writing I’ve ever read … it’d be a best-seller in The Twilight Zone, and ought to be in whichever Zone we live in too." -- Kim Newman, writer of Anno Dracula
RICKY'S HAND
"There are few voices as deranged and sly as this." -- SF Book.com
THE HYENA will be open for crowdfunding from October 21st. Please join us!
